The original Worldcon was a social gathering of fans from around the country in New York City. The "World" came from the World's Fair which was also being held in NYC. So it become a tradition to have many parties at Worldcon.

The convention traditionally hosts an open party in what is known as the consuite. |
An entire floor of a hotel was set aside for people to host parties. To manage traffic to the floor, elevators to the floor was controlled by the convention. These people are waiting in line to get in an elevator to the party floor. |
One of the major closed (by invitation only) parties is the Hugo nominees party. This first set of photos show the prepartion for the party. |
