San Francisco is no longer a commercial port but Oakland across the bay is one of the major container ports on the west coast. There are also oil refineries in the east bay. So it is a common sight to see container ships and tankers going under the Golden Gate bridge. Haley's Comet was rather unspectacular but it made for a great excuse to go to Hawaii. These two photographs were taken from Haleakala. At 10,000 feet the temperature drops below freezing at night and clothing suitable for a New England winter is recommended.
